The first case was filed in the Barisal Cyber Tribunal on Tuesday (August 10) at noon on charges of spreading propaganda on Facebook. Sixteen people, including Firoz Alam Jomaddar, a contractor for the Danish International Development Agencies (DANIDA) project, have been charged in the case. Judge Golam Farooq of the tribunal has directed the PBI to investigate the case and submit a report by October 10.Nurul Islam, a retired accounting officer of Nalchiti in Jhalokati, has filed the case.Plaintiff's lawyer Azad Rahman said that while his client was the accounting officer of Nalchiti Upazila, contractor Firoz Alam withdrew about Tk 10 lakh from the government land excavation project worth Tk 24 lakh. The contractor cuts the soil with an excavator even though there was a condition to work be done by deploying 47 poor people at a wage of 300 taka per person per day. As a result, the poor were deprived of money. When the poor workers complained about the incident, the work was suspended subject to investigation and the rest of the money was withheld. Angered by this, Firoz Alam started a propaganda campaign on Facebook accusing the accounting officer of accepting a bribe of Tk 40,000 and demanding a bribe at the rate of five percent. The plaintiff filed the case due to defamation in the propaganda.Last July, cyber tribunals were formed in eight divisional cities including Barisal.
